Mukunda Rama Rao is a Telugu poet and translator who has brought poetry from around the world to Telugu readers. Born in 1944 in Kharagpur, West Bengal, he has published nine collections of his own poetry, from Valasapoyina Mandahasam (1995) to Raatri Veestunna Gaali (2024).
He is best known for the Ade series, which introduces the poets and their contexts alongside the poems: Ade Aakasam (The Same Sky), Ade Gaali (The Same Wind) on poetry from over a hundred countries, Ade Nela (The Same Land) on poetry from more than forty Indian languages, Ade Kaanti (The Same Light) on medieval bhakti poetry, and Ade Neeru (The Same Water). He has also translated Sufi poetry, Nobel poets since 1901, the tenth-century Buddhist Charyapadas, Assamese Miya poetry, Bengali Baul songs, Tagore’s Fireflies and Khalil Gibran’s Sand and Foam.
His own poems have been translated into English, Polish, Hindi, Urdu, Bengali, Kannada, Tamil, Malayalam, Odia, Santali and Marathi. His English collections include The Smile That Migrated and Other Poems (2011) and Alone in the Night River (2025). His work has been the subject of an MPhil at Madras University and a PhD at Bangalore University.
His honours include the Telugu University Keerti Puraskaram (2009), the C.P. Brown Pandita Puraskaram in Houston (2015), the Tapi Dharma Rao Award for Ade Nela (2020) and the Ajo-Vibho-Kandalam Foundation’s lifetime achievement award (2024).
ముకుంద రామారావు తెలుగు కవి, అనువాదకులు; ప్రపంచ కవిత్వాన్ని తెలుగు పాఠకులకు అందించిన కృషికి పేరొందారు. 1944లో పశ్చిమ బెంగాల్‌లోని ఖరగ్‌పూర్‌లో జన్మించిన ఆయన ‘వలసపోయిన మందహాసం’ (1995) నుంచి ‘రాత్రి వీస్తున్న గాలి’ (2024) వరకు తొమ్మిది స్వీయ కవితా సంపుటాలు వెలువరించారు.
కవులను, వారి నేపథ్యాన్ని పరిచయం చేస్తూ ఆయన అనువదించిన ‘అదే’ సిరీస్ ఆయన కృషిలో ప్రధానమైనది: ‘అదే ఆకాశం’; వందకు పైగా దేశాల కవిత్వంతో ‘అదే గాలి’; నలభైకి పైగా భారతీయ భాషల కవిత్వంతో ‘అదే నేల’; మధ్యయుగ భక్తి కవిత్వంతో ‘అదే కాంతి’; ‘అదే నీరు’. ఇవి కాక సూఫీ కవిత్వం, 1901 నుంచి నోబెల్ కవిత్వం, పదో శతాబ్దపు బౌద్ధ ‘చర్యాపదాలు’, అసోమియా ‘మియా కవిత్వం’, బెంగాలీ బౌల్ కవిత్వం, టాగూరు ‘మిణుగురులు’, ఖలీల్ జిబ్రాన్ ‘ఇసుక నురగ’ కూడా ఆయన అనువదించారు.
ఆయన కవితలు ఇంగ్లీషు, పోలిష్, హిందీ, ఉర్దూ, బెంగాలీ, కన్నడం, తమిళం, మలయాళం, ఒడియా, సంతాలీ, మరాఠీ భాషల్లోకి అనువాదమయ్యాయి. ఆంగ్లంలో ‘The Smile That Migrated and Other Poems’ (2011), ‘Alone in the Night River’ (2025) వెలువడ్డాయి. ఆయన సాహిత్యంపై మద్రాసు విశ్వవిద్యాలయంలో ఎం.ఫిల్., బెంగళూరు విశ్వవిద్యాలయంలో పీహెచ్‌డీ పరిశోధనలు జరిగాయి.
తెలుగు విశ్వవిద్యాలయం కీర్తి పురస్కారం (2009), హ్యూస్టన్‌లో సి.పి. బ్రౌన్ పండిత పురస్కారం (2015), ‘అదే నేల’కు తాపీ ధర్మారావు పురస్కారం (2020), అజో-విభో-కందాళం ఫౌండేషన్ ప్రతిభామూర్తి జీవితకాల సాధన పురస్కారం (2024) ఆయన అందుకున్న గౌరవాల్లో ఉన్నాయి.
