Salma, is a highly influential contemporary Tamil poet, novelist, and political leader. Confinement in her youth led her to write poetry secretly on ripped calendar papers under a pseudonym. Her boundary-pushing novels, like The Dark Hours of the Night and Women, Dreaming, break taboos around female desire and patriarchal oppression. She overcame extreme limitations to serve as a Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha).
